Why upholstered furniture in Ljubljana needs a different cleaning rhythm
Ljubljana is not a dry inland city where a sofa behaves the same after washing all year round. According to ARSO, the city records about 1368 mm of annual precipitation and more than 90 foggy days, while morning relative humidity is often high in the colder months. For upholstery cleaning, that means moisture, rinsing and ventilation need to be adjusted to the home, not only to the fabric.
In apartment blocks along Celovška, Dunajska or Litijska cesta, upholstery usually dries differently than in houses in Sostro, Črnuče, Šentvid or near the edge of the Ljubljana Marshes. Higher floors often allow more airflow and faster ventilation; ground-floor flats, older urban apartments and partly shaded houses can hold moisture longer. That is why, after extraction cleaning of sofas, armchairs, ottomans and upholstered dining chairs, as much water as possible should be removed and the furniture should not be pushed straight back against cold exterior walls.
City flats, terraced houses and older blocks need different handling
The City Municipality of Ljubljana is divided into 17 district communities, and the differences between them show up quickly inside homes. Center and Trnovo have more older buildings, narrow staircases and flats with high ceilings. Šiška, Bežigrad, Moste, Jarše and Fužine include many multi-apartment blocks where furniture is heavily used by children, pets and open-plan cooking. Vič, Rudnik, Polje, Šentvid and Črnuče include more houses and larger living rooms, with more textile surfaces, more seating and more dirt carried in from gardens or terraces.
- Older central apartmentsUpholstered pieces are often close to radiators, exterior walls or windows, so fabric, colourfastness and fillings are checked before cleaning.
- Blocks near main roadsSofas and armchairs collect fine dust faster, making thorough vacuuming before wet cleaning especially useful.
- Homes on the green edge of the cityProperties with a garden, fireplace, dog or cat usually bring more hair, soil traces and odours into backrests and seams.
Ljubljana’s seasons leave marks inside fabric
In spring, pollen enters homes on clothing, hair, pets and through open windows. NIJZ notes that grass pollen in the lowlands of continental Slovenia begins appearing at the end of April, while ragweed is typical in August and September; wider environmental indicators also refer to Ljubljana as a monitoring location for allergenic pollen. After the spring allergy wave, it can be practical to combine upholstery cleaning with mattress cleaning, especially in bedrooms with windows facing parks, Rožnik, Golovec or the Ljubljanica.
In summer, sofas gather sweat, sunscreen, drinks and balcony dust. In autumn, wet shoes, umbrellas, throws and more time spent in the living room change the type of residue. In winter, heating, cooking and less frequent ventilation make odours linger, while the city notes that during the heating season Ljubljana still sees excessive PM10 particles, also linked to biomass heating in individual furnaces. These fine particles do not stay only on shelves; they settle into textile fibres as well.
How cleaning works in a lived-in Ljubljana home
With residential upholstery, the order of work matters because the same room may include a sofa, rug, dining chairs and loose cushions. When the job follows a move, renovation or a longer rental period, upholstered furniture is usually planned after construction or household dust has been removed and before the final textile reset. In those cases, it can naturally fit alongside rug cleaning or a wider deep cleaning appointment.
- Dry dust removal comes first Seats, backrests, edges, gaps between cushions and areas with crumbs, hair and road dust are vacuumed thoroughly.
- Stains are checked next Coffee, wine, children’s food, oily marks and pet traces are treated separately because they do not react to moisture and detergent in the same way.
- Deep rinsing follows Extraction pulls dissolved soil out of the fabric, while Ljubljana’s humidity makes it essential not to use more water than the material can handle.
- Air drying finishes the job Windows, internal doors, heating and distance from walls are adjusted to the season, floor level and furniture layout.
Residential textiles in a city where outdoor dust quickly reaches the sofa
According to the Statistical Office, on 1 January 2021, 60% of occupied dwellings in Slovenia were in one- or two-dwelling houses, while 40% were in buildings with three or more dwellings; for homes built between 2011 and 2021, the share of new construction was slightly higher on the outskirts of larger cities. In Ljubljana, that difference is visible every day: smaller flats often have one main sofa in constant use, while houses may have several upholstered pieces in living rooms, children’s rooms and guest rooms.
Within broader professional cleaning for the home, upholstered furniture is one of the most tangible tasks because seating directly absorbs dust, moisture, odours and daily residue. In a Ljubljana apartment, this does not happen in exactly the same way every year: after a rainy November, a dusty heating season or a pollen-heavy April, the soil profile is different, so both pre-vacuuming and wet rinsing should match the actual condition of the fabric.
